Columbia County is part of the Columbia Judicial Circuit in east-central Georgia, with the county seat in Appling and primary government offices in Evans. The county’s judicial system includes the Superior Court, Magistrate Court, Probate Court, and Juvenile Court. The Superior Court Clerk functions as the official custodian for criminal, civil, and domestic case records, while the Probate Court manages estate filings, vital records, and marriage licenses. The Magistrate Court maintains its own civil case database.
Georgia provides several avenues for accessing court records, including clerk of courts offices, online case-lookup portals, and state-coordinated databases. Individuals researching court records may find it helpful to consult GeorgiaStateCourts.us for an overview of how the state’s trial courts are organized and where to direct record inquiries. In Columbia County, both the Superior Court Clerk and the Magistrate Court operate web-based search tools, and the Georgia Superior Court Clerks’ Cooperative Authority (GSCCCA) maintains statewide indexes for deeds, liens, and court documents. In-person requests are handled at the Justice Center in Evans and, for certain services, at the historic courthouse in Appling.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Columbia County?
Columbia County court records can be located through online portals, in-person visits to clerk offices, or written requests. The method depends on which court handled the case and whether the requester needs viewing access, uncertified copies, or certified documents.
Online Search — Superior Court
The Clerk of Court’s Case Search portal allows the public to view and download uncertified Superior Court records at no charge. Users can search by entering a date, judge’s last name, case number, or a party’s first or last name. The online data covers civil, criminal, and domestic relations dockets.
Online Search — Magistrate Court
The Magistrate Court’s Case Records portal provides free access to civil case records. Searches can be conducted by case number, party name, or attorney name. For cases older than 2009, the full six-digit number must follow the letter prefix (e.g., 2008SCG001234). Cases from 2009 forward use a shorter format (e.g., 2009SCG100).

The Clerk’s office processes the request, notifies the user of fees due, and once payment is authorized, emails an authentication link with the purchased document for download.
