How Do I Look Up Warrants in Georgia?

GeorgiaStateCourts.us is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the FCRA and does not provide consumer reports. All searches conducted on GeorgiaStateCourts.us are subject to the Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.

You can use GeorgiaStateCourts.us to locate a warrant in Georgia, as it compiles publicly available information reported by Georgia's courts and law enforcement agencies into a single search. A search reveals the warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail or bond amount, when available.

Georgia has 159 counties — more than every state except Texas — and each one maintains its own sheriff's office, magistrate court, and records infrastructure. The state has no centralized public warrant database. Even Georgia.gov's own guidance on searching for warrants directs users to contact each county sheriff individually, noting that some offices share information by phone while others require an in-person visit. The re:SearchGA platform, operated by Tyler Technologies, covers only about 25 of those 159 counties and requires a paid subscription. The Georgia Superior Court Clerks' Cooperative Authority indexes real estate and lien records statewide but does not offer a criminal-case or warrant search.

That means a warrant issued in a small county like Echols (population under 4,000) and one issued in Fulton County (home to Atlanta) exist in completely separate systems, neither of which feeds into a single public portal. A person with connections to more than one jurisdiction faces a county-by-county process that can involve dozens of separate calls or visits — a problem the consolidated search on GeorgiaStateCourts.us is built to address.

Are Warrants Public Information in Georgia?

Georgia's Open Records Act (O.C.G.A. § 50-18-71) requires state and local agencies to produce requested public records within three business days. The statute is broad: requests can be made orally or in writing, and the requester does not need to state a reason. Agencies may charge the prorated hourly salary of their lowest-paid qualified employee for search and retrieval, but the first 15 minutes are free.

Arrest warrants and bench warrants are public records once issued. An arrest warrant signed by a magistrate under O.C.G.A. § 17-4-40 becomes part of the court file, and the supporting affidavit is accessible through the clerk's office. Bench warrants issued under O.C.G.A. § 17-7-90 — for failures to appear, bond violations, or refusals to plead — are likewise part of the public case record.

Search warrants and investigative records occupy a different category. O.C.G.A. § 50-18-72(a)(4) exempts from public disclosure any "records of law enforcement, prosecution… in any pending investigation or prosecution of criminal or unlawful activity, other than the initial police arrest reports and incident reports." The Georgia Supreme Court has upheld this exemption as a reasonable policy choice, even when the investigation stretches on for months or years. The exemption is discretionary — agencies may withhold, but are not required to — yet in practice, most law enforcement offices treat it as a blanket bar until an investigation closes.

The result is a gap between what the law technically makes accessible and what any given county has published online. Even arrest warrants, which are clearly public records, may not appear in any digital system if the issuing county lacks an electronic records portal.

How to Search for a Warrant in Georgia

  1. Use GeorgiaStateCourts.us first. Our Instant Warrant Lookup presents you with warrant record data compiled from available public resources in one convenient search. When available, you can find warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail/bond amount, among other details, depending on the record type and issuing county.
  2. Search available court record platforms. The Georgia Courts eAccess page lists third-party providers authorized to host court records, but you will need an account and you may face subscription fees. re:SearchGA covers roughly 25 counties — including Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, and Rockdale — with case information and court documents. Coverage outside those participating counties is unavailable through this platform.
  3. Call the county sheriff's office or clerk of court. Have the subject's full legal name, date of birth, and the county where the warrant may have originated. Georgia's 159 sheriffs' offices each manage their own warrant records independently. Some release information by phone; others require you to appear in person. No fee is charged for a direct warrant inquiry at the sheriff's office.
  4. Visit in person. Walk-in records requests are accepted at both the sheriff's office and the magistrate or superior court clerk's office. Anyone checking on a warrant issued against themselves should be aware that an in-person visit to a law enforcement office may result in immediate arrest if an active warrant is confirmed.
  5. Retain an attorney. A lawyer can contact the sheriff's office or clerk on a client's behalf without triggering an arrest, and attorneys have statutory access to GCIC criminal history records under O.C.G.A. § 35-3-34 that the general public does not.

How Long Is a Warrant Active in Georgia?

Arrest warrants and bench warrants in Georgia do not expire. They remain active in the issuing county's records until the subject is arrested, the court recalls the warrant, or the underlying case is otherwise resolved. Search warrants are the exception: under O.C.G.A. § 17-5-25, a search warrant must be executed within ten days of issuance. Any warrant not executed within that window is void and must be returned to the issuing court marked "not executed" — a hard deadline with no extension provision, unlike states that allow judicial renewals.

Georgia Warrant Records by County

Warrants in Georgia are issued at the county level — by magistrate courts for arrest warrants and by superior or state courts for bench warrants and indictment-related warrants. Georgia does not operate a centralized statewide warrant database that is open to the public. The GCIC (Georgia Crime Information Center), maintained by the GBI, houses criminal history data but restricts access to law enforcement, authorized employers, and attorneys with pending cases. For the public, a warrant search means contacting the sheriff's office or clerk of court in each relevant county. The table below lists all 159 Georgia county sheriff's offices, sourced from the Georgia Sheriffs' Association directory.
