Gwinnett County, Georgia’s second-most populous county, operates an extensive court system that spans multiple jurisdictions—from the Superior Court handling felonies and major civil disputes, to the Probate Court managing estates and vital records. The Clerk of Court’s office at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville serves as the central hub for maintaining and providing access to most court records. This guide details the specific courts, offices, online tools, fees, and procedures involved in searching for and obtaining court records throughout Gwinnett County.
For individuals seeking court case information in Georgia, several pathways exist for locating records. Official clerk offices, public access terminals at courthouses, and online search portals maintained by the courts all provide varying levels of access. The GeorgiaStateCourts.us website may also help users identify publicly available court case information from Gwinnett County and other Georgia jurisdictions. Additionally, the Georgia Superior Court Clerks’ Cooperative Authority (GSCCCA) maintains statewide indexing resources, and the Tyler Odyssey re:SearchGA portal provides electronic access to case data from participating Georgia courts.

Are Court Records Public in Gwinnett County?
Georgia maintains a strong presumption of public access to government records. The Georgia Open Records Act (O.C.G.A. §§ 50-18-70 through 50-18-77), also called the Georgia Sunshine Law, establishes that all public records shall be open for personal inspection and copying. This includes court records maintained by Gwinnett County’s various courts and clerk offices.
However, several categories of records are restricted or exempt from public disclosure for privacy and security reasons:
- Adoption records — Sealed by statute and available only to authorized individuals or by court order
- Juvenile court records — Confidential under Georgia law and accessible only to parties, their attorneys, and authorized individuals
- Mental health records — Protected from public disclosure
- Sealed and expunged records — Restricted by court order; criminal records that have been expunged or sealed are not available to the public
- Records protected by federal or state statute, including sensitive personal information such as Social Security numbers
- Records of pending investigations — Law enforcement investigatory records may be withheld during active investigations
- Certain family court records containing information about child abuse or domestic violence
It is important to note that court records from the office of the Superior, State, and Magistrate Court Clerk are not subject to the county’s Open Records request process and cannot be obtained through the county’s online Open Records portal. Instead, these records must be requested directly from the Clerk of Court at (770) 822-8100 or in person at the GJAC.
For law enforcement records and other county department records that do fall under the Open Records Act, requests can be submitted through the Gwinnett County Public Open Records Center.
