Court records generated across this system—ranging from docket sheets and motions to final judgments and sentencing orders—are official documents that chronicle legal proceedings from filing through resolution. The primary records custodian is the Laurens County Clerk of Courts, a constitutional office responsible for court records, land records, liens, and UCCs. The Clerk of Superior Court also serves, by statute, as the Clerk of both the Magistrate Court and the Juvenile Court.

Are Court Records Public in Laurens County?
Most Laurens County court records are accessible to the public under the Georgia Open Records Act, O.C.G.A. § 50-18-70 et seq., which establishes a broad presumption that public records are open for personal inspection and copying unless exempted by court order or by law. The Act is construed broadly in favor of access.
Several categories of records carry restrictions that limit or eliminate public access:
- Juvenile records: Proceedings involving minors are confidential under Georgia law; arrest records for juveniles or minors are not available to the general public.
- Records under attorney-client privilege: Privileged communications between attorneys and clients that are part of a case file are not subject to public disclosure.
- Records that could compromise active investigations: Information that would interfere with an ongoing criminal investigation or active litigation may be withheld.
- Records containing sensitive personal data: Social Security numbers, medical records, and other personally identifiable information are shielded from public inspection even when contained within otherwise public filings.
- Sealed or expunged records: Any record sealed by court order is inaccessible without a specific court directive authorizing release.
Members of the public denied access to a record may seek review through the Georgia Attorney General’s office or pursue relief in the Superior Court. The Georgia Open Records Act requires agencies to respond to requests within three business days.
