Liberty County is located in coastal southeast Georgia, with Hinesville as its county seat. The county’s court system spans several levels of jurisdiction — from the Superior Court handling major civil and felony criminal matters, to the Magistrate Court adjudicating small claims, and the Probate Court overseeing estates and vital records. Each of these courts generates records that document the full arc of legal proceedings, from initial filings through final judgments and orders.
Those researching cases in Georgia have several starting points. The state’s courts and case information are accessible through GeorgiaStateCourts.us, which can help users identify courts, locate electronic filing portals, and find publicly available case information. In Liberty County specifically, records can be retrieved through the Clerk of Courts office, individual court clerks, public access computer terminals at the courthouse, and several dedicated online search tools. The right approach depends on the type of case, the court that handled it, and how recent the filing is.

Requesting Records in Person or by Mail
In-person visits to Suite 1200 of the Liberty County Justice Center are accepted during regular business hours. Mail requests should include the full names of all parties, the approximate filing date or year, the case number if available, and specific details about the documents needed. Copies of court records are subject to fees established in the Court Fee Schedule. The Clerk accepts credit card payments for copies and civil case filings; court-ordered criminal fines require cash, cashier’s check, or money order only.
Open Records Requests
Non-judicial public records held by Liberty County government agencies can be requested through the county’s Open Records Request portal. This portal operates under the Georgia Open Records Act (O.C.G.A. § 50-18-70 et seq.) and is separate from the process for obtaining court records through the Clerk of Courts.
Are Court Records Public in Liberty County?
Georgia law treats court records as presumptively open to public inspection. Rule 21 of the Georgia Uniform Superior Court Rules states that all court records are public and available for public inspection and copying unless access is limited by law or by a court order. All state and superior court records fall under this same framework.
A court may restrict access to specific documents, but only after following procedural requirements. Before sealing any record, the court must determine that the privacy interest at stake substantially outweighs the public’s interest in access. Any sealing order must specify:
- Which portions of the file are restricted
- The duration of the restriction
- The justification for limiting access
Categories of records that may be restricted or sealed include:
- Juvenile court records (sealed by statute)
- Adoption proceedings
- Records sealed by specific court order
- Protection orders involving family violence, where protected identifiers are redacted from public view
- Certain sensitive family law matters where privacy considerations outweigh public interest
Even in cases involving family violence protection orders, courts are required to ensure that relevant information is entered into appropriate law enforcement registries, while personally identifying information about protected parties is shielded from public access. Redaction of identifiers such as Social Security numbers and financial account information is applied routinely before records are released for copying.
