Troup County is situated in western Georgia along the Alabama border, with its county seat in the city of LaGrange. The county’s court system is part of the Coweta Judicial Circuit, which also encompasses Carroll, Coweta, Heard, and Meriwether counties. Six trial courts operate within Troup County: the Superior Court, State Court, Magistrate Court, Probate Court, Juvenile Court, and three Municipal Courts serving the cities of LaGrange, Hogansville, and West Point. All of these courts generate and maintain records tied to civil disputes, criminal proceedings, family law matters, probate filings, and other judicial actions. The Clerk of Superior and State Courts, currently Jackie W. Taylor, serves as the principal custodian of records for cases filed in both the Superior Court and State Court, while the Magistrate Court, Probate Court, and Juvenile Court each maintain their own files independently.
Those looking to locate court records in Georgia can draw on a combination of state-level tools and local resources. GeorgiaStateCourts.us can help users identify courthouse directories, court forms, and procedural information across all Georgia counties. At the state level, the Georgia Courts E-Access system provides registered users with electronic access to case records from participating courts. Locally, the Troup County Clerk of Court maintains an online case search tool for Superior and State Court dockets, and the Georgia Superior Court Clerks’ Cooperative Authority (GSCCCA) hosts a statewide portal for searching recorded documents, liens, and real estate filings. In-person searches can be conducted at the Troup County Government Center on Ridley Avenue in LaGrange during regular business hours.

Are Court Records Public in Troup County?
Georgia law establishes a strong presumption in favor of public access to court records. Georgia’s Open Records Act (O.C.G.A. § 50-18-70 et seq.) grants any person the right to inspect and copy records maintained by public agencies, including the courts. In addition, Uniform Superior Court Rule 21 declares that all court records are public and available for inspection unless a court order or specific statute restricts access.
Under Rule 21, a judge may limit access to court records only upon a motion and a written finding that the harm from disclosure clearly outweighs the public interest. Blanket sealing of entire case files requires extraordinary justification, and any restriction order must state the specific reasons for limiting access.
Records Generally Open to the Public
Most filings in Troup County courts are accessible, including criminal dockets, civil petitions and judgments, divorce decrees, property recordings, and probate inventories.
Records That Are Restricted or Confidential
Certain categories of records are exempt from public disclosure under Georgia law:
- Juvenile court records involving minors
- Adoption records and related sealed filings
- Medical records submitted in court proceedings
- Attorney-client privileged communications contained in court files
- Confidential attorney work product
- Records related to pending criminal investigations or active prosecutions
- Weapons carry license records maintained by the Probate Court
- Jury list data, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and demographic information
- Sensitive personal identifiers such as Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, and credit card information
Individuals who wish to access records that may fall into a restricted category should contact the relevant court office to determine whether a formal motion or court order is necessary.
Troup County Criminal Court Records
Criminal proceedings in Troup County are divided among multiple courts based on the severity of the offense. Felony cases are prosecuted in the Superior Court through the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office. The Magistrate Court issues arrest and search warrants, conducts preliminary hearings and first appearances, and sets bonds.
Where Criminal Records Are Kept
The Clerk of Superior and State Courts maintains records for all felony cases tried in Superior Court and misdemeanor cases adjudicated in State Court. The Magistrate Court retains records of warrant applications, committal hearings, and bond proceedings. Warrant application fees at the Magistrate Court are $20.00.
